SWAN President Calls for Member Engagement in Sports Politics
The Nigerian Sports Writers Association (SWAN) President, Comrade Benjamin Kemje Isaiah, has urged members to actively participate in sports governance at local, national, and global levels.
During the ongoing National Sports Festival (‘Ogun 2024’), the President addressed an event where SWAN welcomed the Director-General of New Media for Bayelsa State, Governor Mr. Samuel Kolawole Oredipe, who was present during this occasion.
He mentioned that participating in sports politics would provide members with the chance to stay informed about developments within sports federations and also guarantee that SWAN members receive treatment proportional to their level of sacrifice. This involvement ensures comprehensive coverage of all pertinent sporting governance issues.
The president of SWAN praised the aide of the Bayelsa State Governor for boldly entering politics and governance within Nigerian sports. They also urged members to back his efforts.
The president of SWAN stated, “We should rally behind Kolawole Oredipe, who has been an experienced journalist and sports writer. He mentioned, ‘Kolawole was once among us and continues to be deeply connected with our group.'”
Previously, Kolawole Oredipe informed the Sports Writers about his plans to run for the position of South-South Zonal Board Member at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). He has now approached them to seek their backing.
Kolawole informed SWAN members that over a span of 25 years, he has been active in both print journalism and electronic media. He was once part of the Correspondents chapel in Bayelsa State and later contributed as a reporter and sports presenter. Throughout his career, he climbed the ranks to eventually hold the position of Assistant Director, News, at Radio Nigeria’s South-South Zone.
Supported by members of SWAN and the NUJ as well, Kolawole Oredipe conveyed his confidence that he would emerge victorious in the contest to secure a place for the south-south region on the AFN board.
