Was Shemi’s Music Comeback Worth the Hype?

In 2023, Gibril Shema Mico, widely known as Shemi, introduced himself to Rwanda’s music scene with the release of his debut track “Peace of Mind,” which quickly broke into the mainstream, sparked numerous social media challenges, and garnered millions of streams across major platforms. The young vocalist, who says he began making music at the age of four, inspired by his uncle, R&B sensation The Ben — rose to stardom almost overnight. However, after releasing several singles and collaborations, he stepped back from the limelight. To the surprise of many, the then-18-year-old, seen as Rwanda’s next big star, postponed releasing music to focus on his high school studies but promised a strong return to music. “Juggling music with school was not easy, but the good thing is that I learned a lot from it. I’m happy to be back doing what I do best. I’m now back and better,” Shemi told The New Times in 2024. The 22-year-old has kept his word and, after closing his studies, he dropped his first single ‘Uzambwire.’ And, five months later, he is now back with a surprise track ‘Ntibanyurwa’, featuring acclaimed Rwandan rappers Bulldog and Ish Kevin. Produced by Shemi’s longtime collaborator Huybbie, the track blends Afro Rave, a mix of Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian influences — popularized by Nigerian artist Rema on his album ‘HEIS.’ Shemi’s decision to explore this global genre and collaborate with established local rappers shows his commitment to pushing creative boundaries in Rwanda’s music scene. But, for him, this isn’t a comeback, but an evolution. “I can’t really call this a comeback because I feel like I’ve always been there for the people who truly rock with me. I’ve felt their presence, their love, and support. For me, it’s all about choosing the right time to release a new project,” she said in a recent interview with The New Times. I don’t want to be boxed into a specific category. I believe I can do anything I want. I’m all about exploring myself creatively,” he said. While Afro Rave may not define his music going forward, Shemi assured his music lovers that more sounds in that direction are on the way. “It’s not something I’ll stick to exclusively, but you can definitely expect more of what I enjoy making.” As for what’s next, the artiste hinted at a major project in the pipeline, which he’s planning to drop later this year although it is still in the production process. “Even though some people might think I’m taking too long, I believe in delivering something people truly deserve, something good, something I’ve poured a lot of energy into,” he said, reacting to critics that he takes long to deliver. To his fans who are eagerly waiting for his return to the spotlight, Shemi expressed deep appreciation, “I see the love. I appreciate everyone who’s rocking with me, my fans, my supporters, all of you. Shout out to you all. It’s all love.” ALSO READ: Shemi eyes music comeback after high school Though Shemi is no stranger to the music scene, fans and critics alike are watching closely.
