Ed Sheeran Dives Into Persian Weddings and Finds Inspiration in Chaotic ‘Azizam’ Music Video

Ed Sheeran
he immersed himself in Persian culture for his
“Azizam” single
, and nothing captures this essence more effectively than a Persian wedding, which takes pride of place as the central theme of the recently released music video.

The video released on Thursday (April 17), which was helmed by director Saman Kesh, shows Sheeran looking vexed as he battles writer’s block alongside his producer, Ilya Salmanzadeh, at the recording studio.

The Grammy-winning artist finds herself plunged into the turmoil of getting ready for a lavish Persian wedding. Sheeran receives an intense quick education in every aspect of this grand celebration as she tastes various dishes, explores traditional attire, learns dances, and immerses herself further to prepare adequately for the eventful day.

After we completed ‘Azizam’ at the studio, I asked @ilya_music about ideas for a music video,” Sheeran shared on Instagram. “@ilya_music suggested doing it as a Persian wedding because it’s the perfect way to highlight our culture in one shot. So, I reached out to @saman_kesh, whom I’ve collaborated with previously and who shares my Persian background, asking him to create something where I go through an intense yet enjoyable crash-course version of a Persian wedding. His vision was to show how overwhelming but entertaining such an event can be from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with this tradition.

He went on, saying, “It reminded me of Irish weddings from my childhood in some aspects, yet it stood apart in others. Just as the melody and instruments blend together in a tune, our cultures share numerous interconnected traits. Yet at their core lies an unshakeable bond of love and pride. The entire shoot was delightful; I discovered countless new elements, shared this journey with my father, and collaborated alongside exceptional individuals.”

The festive video ends with Sheeran leaving the wedding feeling rejuvenated and eager to create another chart-topping track, something he has accomplished numerous times before.

‘Azizam,’ which means ‘my dear’ or ‘my beloved’ in Arabic, is slated to feature on Sheeran’s forthcoming album.
