Faridpur’s Char Dwellers Pin Hopes on Eid-ul-Azha for Livestock Sales
Faridpur, May 25 – With Eid al-Azha just two weeks off, low-income inhabitants of the distant char regions in Faridpur are filled with anticipation, viewing this event as their primary chance for financial improvement throughout the year.
Extending over three upazilas within the district, the shoals alongside the Padma and Arial Khan rivers house numerous families who primarily depend on animal husbandry for sustenance.
Families usually raise several livestock each year with the intention of selling them before Eid, when the demand reaches its peak.
During a recent trip to the isolated regions of North Channel, including Decreer Char and Char Madhabdia unions, along with portions of Charbhadrasan and Sadarpur upazilas, I observed a common sight—men, women, and even children taking care of cows, goats, and sheep.
Each day, families can be observed guiding their livestock out early in the morning for pasture and then leading them back home just as the sun sets, maintaining this routine throughout the entire year.
Firoz Molla, who lives in Char Dholai within the North Channel Union, has a flock of 26 sheep.
He remains hopeful of obtaining a favorable price for them during Eid, believing that it will ensure his family’s financial stability for the upcoming year.
Across the 13 unions situated in Faridpur’s char area, these similar sentiments can be heard repeated.
