Shubman Gill Named India’s New Test Captain: Era of Change Dawns
Pakistan, May 24 – The Indian cricket board declared on Saturday that they have named Shubman Gill as the new Test captain. At 25 years old, Gill will take charge of the team for the upcoming five-Test series against England beginning on June 20. This appointment comes after Rohit Sharma decided to retire from Test cricket, joining Virat Kohli in stepping down, which created significant changes within the squad.
Gill, recognized for his refined batting style and extensive shot selection, is presently leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and has guided them into the playoffs. Rishabh Pant will be serving as Gill’s deputy. According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, this appointment was made unanimously following an evaluation of his impressive performance in the IPL along with insights provided by specialists.
Head coach Ajit Agarkar recognized the difficulty of steering the team following the departures of two significant members. He showed faith in Gill, believing him to be the appropriate person for this crucial phase. “This is a major responsibility, but he’s an outstanding player,” Agarkar stated.
Due to recent health concerns, Mohammed Shami was not included in the lineup, whereas Jasprit Bumrah will join the team but his participation will be monitored closely because of a back problem. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj rejoins the squad, along with batsman Karun Nair making an appearance after an absence of eight years. Additionally, promising player Sai Sudharsan has earned his place in the team.
The series against England signifies the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship for India. These five tests will be held at Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval between June 20 and July 31. Gill along with coach Gautam Gambhir will determine the batting lineup and select players for the crucial opening and number two spots vacated by retiring legends.
