Iranian Director Jafar Panahi Claims Top Prize with “It Was Just an Accident” at Cannes

The Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his movie “It Was Just an Accident,” as declared by the jury on Saturday.

The suspense novel outshone 21 competing entries to claim the top honor at the renowned festival.

“The Incident was Merely an Accident” focuses on a cohort of ex-prisoners from Iran who successfully capture the guard they believe was accountable for their torture while incarcerated.

Panahi, who spent time in prison from July 2022 to February 2023, is among Iran’s most globally recognized film directors.

Previously, he has claimed the highest honors at both the Venice Film Festival and the Berlinale event held in Berlin, Germany.

The panel overseeing the 78th Cannes Film Festival was led by actress Juliette Binoche.
