The following includes significant spoilers for CBS’
Matlock
Season 1 finale.
Matlock
s entire season-long mystery was resolved during last night’s two-hour finale — although Matty isn’t fully aware of it just yet.
While assisting Sarah (Leah Lewis), who decided to take on a case without informing the firm—oops! — new Jacobson Moore partner Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) collaborated with “Matty” / Madeline Kingston (Kathy Bates) to uncover precisely how Julian (Jason Ritter) managed to provide the funds 14 years prior for purchasing their brownstone.
In the end, Olympia used some of Matty’s “tricks of the trade” to deceive a bank officer and manage to see the trust belonging to Julian herself.
claims
he had been given access to, by his mother, to lock down their dream home. Olympia (with an assist from Edwin as “Julian”) pulls off the subterfuge, then excitedly phones Matty to declare, “There was no payout!,” that Julian
did
get the money from the trust. And that she will head over to Matty’s later with copies of everything.
However, once Olympia ends the call, the bank officer inquires whether she would like to examine Julian’s safety-deposit box as well. Intrigued and perhaps apprehensive, Olympia agrees. Inside, she discovers the incriminating Welbrecha study. As soon as she secures it, Julian appears—how did he know? This prompts an urgent conversation where Julian speaks candidly and passionately about being only 26 years old when it happened and feeling compelled to impress his father. He implores her not to let one bad decision define him or taint their children’s perception of him; therefore, they need to find a way to address this discreetly.
As the episode ends with an unresolved twist, we shift our focus from the secure vault chamber to Matty’s residence where she sits in anticipation for Olympia’s visit. However, upon hearing the doorbell ring, the person standing before her isn’t her supervisor but rather an unfamiliar face (portrayed by
Sons of Anarchy
‘s Niko Nicotera) who says that Aflie somehow tracked him down, and he may be the motherless kid’s father!
