Santa Cruz Artist Creates Botanical Prints to Aid LA Wildfire Relief

Nestled among the towering redwoods in Felton, Lili Arnold is crafting a natural wonder within her art studio. “For around eight years now, I have been engaged in printmaking,” she mentioned.

As the offspring of two artists, creativity flows through her veins. “Our family was quite artistic. We were constantly engaged in crafting activities,” Arnold explained.

Thus, becoming an artist suited her naturally. She began her journey at UC Santa Cruz, graduating with a foundation in graphic design.

“I was still employed full-time in graphic design and felt the urge for a shift. I genuinely resonated with the experience of using my hands once more and producing work that came from deep within,” Arnold stated.

A buddy suggested she organize a print-making exhibition, which is when her career really began to soar. She left her graphic design position to concentrate solely on printmaking from then on.

“I kept doing more and more, eventually moving towards exotic flora. The textures of their thorns fascinate me along with the striking contrast between vibrant blooms and lush green stems. This provides infinite ideas for fresh creations since there’s such an extensive variety of plants,” Arnold explained.

Arnold mentions that she has produced around 100 distinct botanical block artworks up until now, with each print having between 200 to 300 impressions. However, lately, she felt motivated to explore a fresh creation.

“it’s an incredibly simple method to produce something that could have a substantial impact,” arnold stated.

Arnold created a print and partnered with Bonfire to raise money for fire victims of the Southern California wildfires.

“When I designed this, my initial intention was to create a piece of art that individuals could easily print at home. The concept was aimed at those who might have lost their homes and were looking for something to lift their spirits. Later, considering ways to increase our influence, the notion of organizing a t-shirt fundraising campaign emerged,” Arnold explained.

Planning to sell 50 shirts, she has already managed to sell almost a thousand, amassing over $12,000.

“Everything will go straight to CalFund, located in Los Angeles. They are actively assisting individuals with obtaining food and gaining access to whatever type of aid they require,” Arnold stated.

A scenario all too common for Arnold and their community.

“During the CZU fire, we had to evacuate for 10 days. Fortunately, our house remained intact, though many of our friends weren’t as lucky and lost their homes. This has affected us profoundly based on our personal experience, and because we can empathize with those facing similar situations,” Arnold stated.

The reason she selected wildflowers for the shirt’s design is because they represent rebirth and resilience. It was her method of bringing some brightness into even the gloomiest periods.

“There’s simply a great deal of suffering that makes it clear we need tools to assist individuals during tough times. Regardless of what occurs, we will find a way to persevere. Even though the path might be extremely challenging, the community will always support you,” Arnold stated.
