PORTALES, N.M. (KAMR/KCIT) — Eastern New Mexico University has revealed a fresh mural named “Answering the Call,” created by ENMU graduate Jacob Lee. The unveiling ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 24, at 5 p.m., located in the College of Business parking area near the newly established ENMU workout facility.
We feel privileged to have a member of our Greyhound family showcase their artistic skills and talents with us,” stated James Johnston, ENMU Chancellor. “His path toward earning degrees from ENMU is distinctive yet resonates with numerous present-day students and graduates we have. I am confident that both our university grounds and local society will be moved by the creativity and splendor embodied in his creations.
The event starts prior to the unveiling at 4 p.m., featuring food and beverages.
The mural draws upon local symbolism and personal meaning, celebrating the high plains’ spirit and the resilience of those who call it home. According to Jacob Lee, the imagery in “Answering the Call” includes:
- Drought-tolerant but still blossoming, these flowers symbolize how elegance and development can flourish despite challenges.
- The Mammoth – A nod to ancient fossils discovered in the region, symbolizing the immense challenges we face and overcome.
- The Water Tower – A symbol of life and hope, it stands tall like the students and community it serves.
- Stars symbolize our aspirations for tomorrow, encouraging us always to progress and create anew.
- Background Design – Influenced by the gray-hued hill patterns created by the Navajo tribe, symbolizing endurance, tradition, and fortitude.
- Green and Silver – ENMU’s colors tie it all together, enduring and timeless.
“When thoughts of surrender seem easiest, a greyhound encourages us to continue racing ahead,” stated Jacob Lee, the muralist. “Each component of this artwork symbolizes resilience—the determination to withstand life’s challenges, regardless of their intensity. It serves as a visual reminder to press onward and heed that message.”
This marks the fifth mural to be added to ENMU’s campus.
Art displayed publicly on college grounds, particularly within small towns where people might have restricted access to museums or galleries, promotes cultural growth, encourages conversations, and ensures everyone can engage with artistic expressions,” stated Bryan Hahn, who serves as the Curator of the University Art Collection. “This artwork turns common areas into wellsprings of motivation, contemplation, and education for both learners and the wider public. At ENMU, we take pride in our enduring dedication to maintaining an impressive array of artworks around our campus.
At present, murals can be found in the
Administration Building
, the
