Happy Face Episode 6 Recap: Unveiling Lorelai’s Secrets

Episode 5
of
Happy Face
concluded with a surprising revelation from DA Calloway: Following the finding of Heather’s DNA on Keith’s pipe wrench, Calloway concluded that Keith and Elijah were responsible for Heather’s murder, having committed the act together.

Melissa dials her father from the protest, and Keith informs her that he definitely didn’t collaborate with Elijah. Denise, Heather’s mother, requests to talk with Keith, at which point he confesses that he murdered her daughter and claims he acted independently. After Melissa resumes the call, Keith inquires whether she received an image showing her former partner who had been severely assaulted.

Denise consents to an interview with Ivy and Melissa, and she excels at it. She greets them composedly before stating that the District Attorney is dishonest. Kudos to her!

In the meantime, Hazel is once more keeping a low profile at school when Josh discovers her presence. She reveals to him the sketches Keith made of his victims and informs him that Keith had disclosed storing some of their belongings like jewelry inside an air vent in a particular motel room. This information excites Josh immensely, and he expresses eagerness to visit this location right after lunch the following day.

The following day, Hazel rushes out anticipating seeing just Josh, but he is accompanied by the clique of mean girls as well. Though displeased, she climbs into the backseat, and they all head off to check out the motel.

Denise shares with Ivy and Melissa an image of Heather’s grandmother, Lorelai. As she browses additional photographs, Denise appears quite somber since this week marks what would be Heather’s birthday. Among these pictures is one labeled “Ziggy’s Basement” along with a date; it seems likely that Heather, who had been a vocalist, might have sung there. Gabriella contacts them to inform that Elijah will have another court hearing in two days.

Calloway, who is slimy, goes to see Keith in jail and brings along a sandwich. Despite eating it, Keith becomes angry because Calloway spread the rumor that he’s a liar, which isn’t accurate. Moving forward with his agenda, Calloway informs Keith about what he needs: signing a fresh statement indicating collaboration between him and Elijah. Should Keith decline, he faces extradition to Texas, leading to an extended delay of his execution date. However, this opportunity might be fleeting since after this single shot at changing the confession, such terms won’t remain available.

Keith grabs a pen to sign, but stops himself. Then he turns to Calloway and inquires about his own daughter, only for the DA to instruct him to keep his family out of the matter.
Keith
smiles hisSerial Killer smile and remarks, “Thewrong guy was convicted, andyou’re fully aware ofit.”

Hazel and her friends head to the motel, but soon realize it has been shut down. Despite this, Hazel remembers the specific room number and manages to obtain the key from the office by breaking a window. After searching Room 17 without success, they decide to separate and explore the remaining rooms; Hazel ends up with Josh. He becomes confused as to why she appears angry with him. Hazel questions why he invited Summer along, someone who he says was previously his girlfriend. An apology follows, leading to them sharing a kiss.

When they meet up with the rest of the gang in the parking lot, Summer claims she found a bag of jewelry in a locker in the office, and Hazel runs in to get it. She finds a locker with the word “slut” written on it, but no bag of jewelry. Then she hears the tires squeal as her so-called friends take off without her. Hazel tries to call them, but they hand up on her. In tears, Hazel calls Keith and asks for help.

Ben is having a tough time. His supervisor enters his office and delivers some grim news: he won’t be getting the promotion to regional manager after all. Due to negative publicity from Melissa’s interview, upper management isn’t pleased and would like to see him leave entirely.

Ivy, Melissa, and Tyler go to Ziggy’s Basement, where they encounter Ziggy. They present him with a picture of Heather, but he does not recognize her. Ziggy maintains recordings of all the acts that perform at his venue and looks through them for anything related to Heather without success. Then they search using the name “Lorelai” and voila! They find a clip of Heather performing. What’s more, this performance happens on the night of the murder, and she performs the exact song Elijah has consistently said belongs to her. To top it off, the timestamp on the footage supports Elijah’s alibi; he wouldn’t have been able to commit the crime.

The motel room is dimly lit when a vehicle arrives to collect Hazel. This situation seems quite off since Keith had dispatched an individual called Ennis to fetch his abandoned granddaughter? Disgusting. The unsettling fellow suggests that she ought to retaliate against her companions who left her behind and mentions he is penning a piece about Keith. He presents her with his draft, hands over a card, and expresses his desire to conduct interviews with both her and Melissa as part of his research for the book.

Hazel rushes inside sobbing, not wanting to speak with Ben, who then hears her weeping in her bedroom. She inadvertently lets go of the card Ennis had given her, which Ben retrieves. Afterward, he dials Ennis and issues a threat, yet Ennis responds calmly, stating that next time, he’ll simply abandon her beside the road when it’s dark.

Ivy and Melissa are questioning Joyce once more, with Joyce expressing doubt about whether Calloway will make the correct choice, calling him out for his denial of innocence. During their conversation, Melissa discovers a tube of lipstick in the guest bedroom and identifies it as belonging to Jillian. This prompts her to challenge Joyce, who then confesses that Keith had contacted her three months prior. She revealed that he informed her Melissa might require assistance from her.

Jillian went to Joyce to prepare for setting up the call between Keith and herself. She also requested some case files and photographs from Joyce. During their conversation, Joyce confessed to Melissa that she created the smiling face carving on the tree near the river and even made it appear old. She assured Melissa that her brother was unaware of these actions. Initially, Melissa wanted to share every detail with Elijah’s lawyer, Gabriella; however, Ivy convinced her against it. Ultimately, they had conclusive evidence proving that Elijah did not murder Heather.

The moment has arrived for Elijah’s hearing, and Gabriella lays out her case. The video in question displays a timestamp of 9:33 p.m. on February 18th, whereas Heather’s estimated time of passing falls within the window of 9:45 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Additionally, records from Elijah’s workplace indicate that he began his shift, located two hours’ drive away, proving that he stayed at work until 9:00 a.m. the next day. When combined with the DNA proof linking Keith to the crime scene, this demonstrates conclusively that Elijah had no involvement in the homicide.

Gabriella requests a retrial, and Calloway consents. However, the judge decides to drop the charges and set Elijah free right away. Unexpectedly, Calloway also approves of this decision, and thus Elijah gains his freedom.

Afterwards, Melissa goes up to Calloway to express her gratitude for his decision to do what’s right. He informs her that he will be stepping down from the upcoming election and has decided not to retry Keith.

Ben examines Hazel’s call history and dials an unfamiliar number, which leads to Keith answering. He swiftly ends the call and ignores his phone when it begins to ring again.

Ben reaches out to Melissa to inform her that Hazel has been conversing with Keith, and that marks the end of this episode.
